El Tatio

Today’s expedition was 100 km north of San Pedro de Atacama on relentless bone-shaking washboard gravel roads to El Tatio (the crying grandfather). Our uncomfortable road journey was rewarded with clear blue skies, mild temperatures, and no other human beings around for miles. Douglas brought his drone again, and we can share with you some of the spectacular scenery that is northern Chile and the Atacama Desert.

We visited the hot springs, where mud boiled away madly, and the hot water geysers erupted on regular intervals. We then lunched from the back of our Toyota LandCruiser expertly driven by Cristobal our unfailingly positive and resourceful guide. We were rewarded on our drive back with an intent-looking Andean fox.

Tomorrow we leave Atacama, and head for Lima for the next stage of Anson’s Voyage 20:20:60.
