Day Three: Rhinos in the afternoon

Our afternoon drive starts with a quick ‘high tea’ at 4:30 pm then heading out. This afternoon it was travelling to the west side of the reserve to look for southern white rhinos. Our guide sensibly managed expectations talking about reduced numbers globally, threats from poachers, etc. Then as we rounded the bend, there was a small ‘crash’ of rhinos. We hurried to get downwind of them and waited. They slowly grazed their way past us with two calves, three females and a very large bull rhino. It was only after they passed us, and then got our scent on the down wind did they even realise we were there. We actually saw a few more later on but didn’t go close.
